I wrote the opening section of this multi-part feature for Mountain Life, digging into Ontario's under-the-radar backcountry ski scene.
I spoke with longtime local skiers about why they've largely given up on resort skiing in favour of touring the Niagara Escarpment — the appeal of silence and fresh powder over crowded lift lines, the strategy required to chase lake-effect snowfall, and the calculated risk that comes with skiing terrain you can't groom or patrol. It's a piece about a small, dedicated subculture hiding in plain sight in cottage country.
